Giant Strides in the Horizon for Data Protection as Federal Government Approves the Establishment of a New Agency for Data Protection in Nigeria

The Federal Government has announced the Federal Executive Council approval to establish a new agency, to be known as the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB). The approval for the establishment of the Agency was at the behest of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Pantami.
Nigeria a significant increase in the adoption of data platforms. With the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) and issuance of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) in January 2019 a subsidiary legislation to the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) Act 2007 there has also been an increased awareness about the need for data protection and privacy.
The Bureau will be responsible for consolidating the gains of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) and supporting the process for the development of a primary legislation for data protection and privacy. The bill ensures that the Bureau will aid the creation of an enabling environment for Nigerian startups including access to grants and sponsorship from a Startup Investment Safe Fund for young innovators
The Startup Bill for the Agency is currently before the National Assembly (NASS)
